Unconditional by Kelly Lawrence

unconFor Ashley, the idea of being in love has great appeal. She loves to spend her time daydreaming about men who are her idea of perfect. But she has never been in a real relationship, partly because she lives in the shadow of her confident and gorgeous best friend, and partly because she doesn’t want to settle for anyone but Mr. Right. Then she meets Joe, a bad boy fresh out of Juvie who is totally into her, and she him. As she gets to know him better, she realizes things aren’t always as they seem, not only with Joe, but also with her family and friends.

This book wasn’t bad. Overall it’s a great love story. Joe is a sweet guy, and I love the interaction between him and Ashley.  He definitely takes on many teenage girls’ ideas of perfection. But I still don’t get the sudden change of attitude he has from the first time we meet him to the second time. It’s almost like he fell in love with Ashley overnight. Also, I can’t say I’m a fan of Ashley. I can relate to her self-esteem issues and innocence, but sometimes she seems a bit full of herself and hotheaded. And why does a girl who is supposed to be smart and practical decide to sleep with a guy she started dating less than a week ago? She should know better than that, regardless of how good the guy is.

But seriously, it’s a good book. I’d probably give it three and a half stars out of five. The story is still well-written and good, with the exception of those character inconsistencies. I’d recommend it to all teenage girls who, like Ashley, are in love with being in love.
