You know the feeling when you finish a Jane Austen book? A sort of light, good feeling that makes you smile and you feel like nothing could go wrong that day? Don’t you wish that there was an author out there today who can create that feeling?
Well, there is. Meg Cabot, who is the author of teen and adult books, is definitely Jane Austen’s brain child. She can write a good story with just enough romance to make you smile, but not enough to make you feel smothered, roll your eyes, and put the book down.
In Every Boy’s Got One, for example, she writes about a woman going to Italy for her best friend’s modern-day elopement (which means that she told everybody before the wedding) and it’s going perfectly… except she hates the groom’s best friend, no matter how handsome he is. Well, you can probably guess the ending, right? But you probably don’t know all the hysterical quirks that make the characters real. And Meg Cabot avoids the mistake many romance writers make: stick to the romance, not the story. In a lot of romance novels, there’s barely any story line and the narrator’s thoughts are usually on the person they’re in love with, right from the beginning… and most of those thoughts are sappy. But Meg Cabot sticks to a solid story line and in the beginning, only a thought or two is reserved for the love interest (unless of course it’s a journal entry and the love interest did something really irking) She builds up the romance along the way until the first date, kiss, confession of love, etc. By that point, you can’t help but smile (unless you just got dumped or cheated on. But then you really shouldn’t be reading these books anyway). When you finish the book you feel satisfied, and you can’t wait for the next great romance that will give you the same feeling.
That’s what separates Meg Cabot and Jane Austen from other romance authors: the satisfaction of reading a great book with just the amount of romance to make you smile.
